So I’m still new and have two QT tanks in a room. One has coral and inverts in it and the other was an observation only for fish. I noticed what i thought was ich on a tang in Qt and treated it with copper but learned the hard way about aerosol copper transmission to my other tank. My fault… I’m new…

I since drained, cleaned and left empty the fish qt tank and transferred the tang to the coral qt tank after 14 days of copper.

The coral qt tank was reading 0.16 so i added cupramine and polysorb filters to the HOB filter but the copper has gone up each day for 4 days and is now at 0.46 ppm…. Am i screwed? I have no idea why it’s still going up. I have even done 2 large water changes 50+%

Thanks in advance!

Ich can transfer through aerosol transmission, however the amount of water transferred for one tank to other through aerosol (water droplets) is minuscule and not likely to have any negative effects. No sure what is going on?

@Randy Holmes-Farley

I don't know that the copper really gets transmitted by airborne water droplets, but I don't know for sure.

Did you have any rock or sand in the fish QT that was exposed to copper and is now in the coral QT?

I agree. There is virtually no way for enough to transfer from one tank to another via aerosol transmission that you are describing. You’d have to take gallons of actual water from copper qt and change with coral qt. Something else is going on.

It’s so bizarre…. The tanks are right next to each other is the only explanation i can think of…. The source water tested 0.00 from my rodi system and i don’t even use the same tools in each tank. And it’s going up which is the weirdest part…. The qt tank that was treated and sits next to the coral qt tank doesn’t even have water in it for 5 days now

I’m stumped

None…. The only thing that was in both tanks is the tang

Lion, your post is confusing. I hope you're not adding Cupramine. I believe this product contains Copper.

It absolutely does! Cupresorb removes copper, Cupramine INCREASES copper. If the OP is using Cupramine, that's almost certainly where the copper is coming from.

Could it be some Rock or Sand that was previously in a Tank with copper? It could be leaching out.

There is nothing that has ever gone in both tanks exept the 1 tang…I’m new and also very over cautious of all this so I’m super confused. I’ve read that copper can aerosol transmit to nearby tanks so I’m still wondering if that’s what did it when i was running the second qt a foot away with full copper. However that tank has been empty and cleaned for a week and the copper is going up on the other qt…. I did an 80% water change yesterday and will test today again… thanks everyone!

If you have no rocks or coral in your tank, I would then start looking at your replacement water as a possible source.

There is rocks and sand as it’s a fully cycled qt tank. But none of those things were ever in a tank with copper.

I tested my source water from my rodi system and it’s 0.00

I did a 80% water change yesterday and the number didn’t change at all

I would still suspect the Rocks or Sand or some Copper from a device or object. A nick on a cord or cracked pump housing also.
