We all wanna be cool like you, so I’m asking how you earned all of your cool profile badges. Like everything in life I’m sure they are not simply given. So it would be cool to hear how you earned them all?

I participate and support the forum, that’s my secret. And I’m not cool because of badges. Lol!

You’re cool for the support you give to the community, the badges are like pieces of flair lol

I got that for buying an expensive R2R sign, lol! It doesn’t light up anymore, but it’s still hanging up in my Reef Cave.

Thanks! There is one badge I’d like to get honestly, not just for the badge, but to be a part of the group. Been holding my breath for four years now on getting it. Lol! Oh well, I’m still here regardless.

The only problem I have with badges is new people tend to think because someone has a lot of them it means that person knows their stuff and is someone to trust for advice and often that is far from the truth.

I could see how that would be easily perceived. Unfortunately that will happen regardless of badges as showcased in the Facebook reef discussions. That is a swamp of bad advise. I’ve seen those discussions in the past and now I refuse to have a Facebook lol regardless I’d like to think the majority of responses on R2R are knowledgeable enough to respond. But at the end of the day it’s always up to the reader to research more and gain a knowledge base to make their own informed decision. Although in this day and age I feel like that may be asking a lot.

All depends on the badges. Only those with verified expertise get expert badges such as fish disease expert. Agree alot of badges don't mean knowledge, but gotta read what the badges are for too :)

That’s why I got rid of a few, it goes both ways, and I don’t want any expectations raised of me because I bought something or am in a user group.

I actually thought about going back to edit my post saying you were not one of those people. If people look at any of your posts they'll know your the real deal.

Sounds like you get it..
And that condition is perpetuated by people intentionally seeking these badges; rather than simply sharing their advice/ knowledge with the community, unconditionally, and being surprised by the recognition and awarded a meaningful badge. :thinking-face:

Thanks, but I just consider myself a normal hobbyist. There’s professionals and experts out there who know much more and are really the real deal. I just wish they’d participate on the hobbyist side more without the sales pitch.

Ya but you have experience. We had a saying in my trade " there's no substitute for experience" I feel that carries over to this hobby as well.

Experience trumps degrees. That's what I was told in my job

I've seen my share of paper masters. I had one once tell me electrical was his forte. He came over one day and was stumped by a no crank no start issue. If he measured voltage from the battery negative to the engine block he had battery voltage. I looked at him and said have you checked the ground cable? Sure enough it was corroded in half. I'm glad I didn't have any forte :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
