How do you know vermetid snails are dead?

Title says it all. I have vermetid snails but unless I see a mucus web I have no clue just looking at the tube if the snail is alive or dead.

The mucus is one thing the second thing on some tubes is that they go abit transparent with a purple hue to it. Just smash the tube and let the Fish eat them

If they're multiplying, then at least some are alive.
If you crush some and your nassarius snails immediately emerge and attack, then those were alive.
If you feed and you see the web, then those are alive (like you said).

Seriously though, I guess I'd wonder how many we're talking about and what your concern and/or goal is.
*I've had some but never had any real issue and only crushed the ones that were easy to get to (during maintenance) -- I think dosing calcium carbonate for cyano a while back might have actually gotten rid of mine by coincidence,,, but mine were the vermetids with skinny tubes,,, not the larger tubed ones that some post about

I can’t say they are causing a problem but I’d rather not let them get to the point that they are a problem. And I definitely can’t count them, my display is not small, there are enough that I know they are there haha good to know about the color change to the tube though

You can always get a army of bumble bee snails, they will help keep them in check since they are known to eat veremit snails, i have seen it myself in my tank but keep in mind to have them well fed because they can go after other snails if very hungry but they do prefer Vermetid snails and smaller snails in general like colonista and they do eat Left over food and algae as Well

If you didn’t do anything to kill the vermitids they are likely alive and well!

Did it end up working for you? I’m 1 week in using double the recommended dose twice daily. Additionally, wet skim, rinsed frozen 1x/day (holding on other food for 2 weeks), cleaning skimmer head/neck weekly, and manual removal on easy to access ones.
