Leaving your reef tank unattended for a few days can definitely be stressful. Even when everything is running smoothly, there’s always that thought in the back of your mind: What if something goes wrong while I’m away?

Before heading out, the goal should be simple: keep things stable and predictable. Right before a trip is usually not the best time to make big changes or try to “improve” the system.

Here are a few things worth checking before you leave:

  • Make sure your ATO is working properly and that you have enough RO/DI water to last the entire trip.
  • Check your auto feeder, or make sure the person feeding your fish knows exactly how much food to give. Pre-portioned meals can help prevent overfeeding.
  • Confirm that your heater, cooling system, return pump, powerheads, skimmer, and other equipment are all running normally.
  • Test the basic water parameters and make sure the tank is stable.
  • Refill your dosing containers so alkalinity, calcium, trace elements, or other additives don’t run out while you’re gone.
  • If possible, use remote monitoring, cameras, controllers, or alerts to keep an eye on the system while you’re away.
  • Have someone you trust check the tank if needed, and leave clear, simple instructions in case of an emergency.
It’s also usually best to avoid major changes right before leaving. Installing new equipment, making big dosing adjustments, doing unusually heavy maintenance, or adding new livestock can create problems at the worst possible time.

What does your pre-vacation reef checklist look like?

What’s the one thing you always double-check before leaving?

Have you ever had something go wrong while you were away that changed how you prepare your tank now?

My checklist looks just like the one you mentioned! The one thing I always double check is my auto feeder!
