I will be going out on a trip soon for a week and will be leaving my tank in the care of a roommate. While we all have tank experience I'm not too worried but I feel as though every time I go on a trip/vacation I end up losing something. Whether it's a small coral or invert or fish it feels as though it happens every time. I usually do a water change before I leave and make sure everything's cleaned and set for success. I've tried my hand at auto feeders but since I feed a lot of frozen food it doesn't always work. When you go on vacation what is your protocol for your tanks?

If it is no longer than a week I only feed pellets and flakes through an autofeeder. Automatic top-off is a must for me and the night before I leave I add a couple bags of living copepods :) never had any issues and I even have a regal angel in my tank

I dont change anything. No water changes, no cleaning skimmers or sumps or anything.
I make sure my ro do top off is working properly. I sometimes get a bigger peut trash can of rodi and dump my ato in there if im going for few weeks( my normal ato container is only 20gallons).

I switched from frozen/ pallets to pallets only . The fish eventually take into the pellets if there is nothing else to eat. Even the copperband starts picking on rocks and eat that way as he is the only one that dosnt eat pellets. All tangs and everything else eats pellets when they have no choice. They are creatures of habit .

So change minimal things cuz thats when almost everyone mess up. You think by doing a water change and clean your skimmer and pumps before you leave will be good. Think again. That when the pumps start seazing to work and your skinmer starts overflowing and fowl your tank.
