I'm gonna weigh in on this.

If you live in the Florida Keys, you may be part of the Conch Republic. If you were born in Key West, Florida...you are called a conch (pronounced Conk). If you have lived in Key West for 7+ years, you are a freshwater conch (Pronounced Conk). The Florida Keys aren't forgiving to tourists who pronounce it con-ch. You are immediately considered a gullible mark by the locals, who will immediately correct your pronunciation and try to sell you something.

Wherever you are, ask a local to pronounce it first, then go with whatever they say. Saves you a lot of hassle.

When I was in Key West it was definitively Conk!

I say "conk" as its more satisfying to say. Then again, this is one of those things were both are correct because they both communicate the idea

I lived in the Conch Republic for 12 years. It is pronounced "konk" in places where conch are actually found, everything else is tourist babble. It was mispronounced in the Lord of the Flies film.

Are the representatives and government leaders in the Conch Republic actually conchs? I didn't know these molluscs were capable of such a feat. Are you a conch yourself or did you just live there for a bit. If not, must have been weird to be the only human surrounded by a bunch of snail like creatures.

It comes from the latin word concha which is pronounced with a "ch". Unsurprisingly the Americans butchered it and decided it had a "k" sound.
Yeah cause stupid Americans thought the Ch in Latin really isn't supposed to be pronounced hard as in Christ,Chi or even Chaeto. In Florida it's pronounced Conk but transplants use the soft ch sound. Of course they can't pronounce Boca Raton either it's pronounced Ra tone not Ra Tan lol.

First time I ever experienced the word was in the Bahamas on vacation in the 90s and they called them Conks in which we were eating Conk Fritters which are delightful. I have always said Conk since then. In all my travels I have never heard them with a CH at the end.

On a side note my grandfather and Uncles are partially responsible for ridding the Palm Beach inlet area around peanut Island of those pesky conchs. Their driveway used to be lined with queen conch shells. They are making a comeback though I've found juveniles at Dubois which is not pronounced Du Bwa it's pronounced Do boys.

Lol changes in pronouncing French words always cracks me up, particularly because they are so serious about formality in their language in the Académie Française

The family themselves are the ones who changed the pronunciation, I suppose it was to fit in. I know both my grandmother's original last names were changed to be more American.
