So I built an aio 40 breeder as a frag tank. I got a killer deal on a 36” dual 250 watt metal halide with t5 supplements. How high above the tank should I suspend the light. I’m thinking around 18-24 inches, or can it be safely placed closer? Any advice will help. I just purchased new phoenix 14k bulbs and ati blue plus bulbs for it.

I run my 120 at 14" and my 45 12" deep frag system at 18".
The frag system is a 20x20 reflector and the 120's are lumen bright mini's.
18" would be where I would most likely hang it. Higher wont hurt as you can always lower it.
A par meter would help but I have never used one.

I keep mine at about 8 inches because I don't like the spill. A lot will depend on how intense the light is. If you got a Giesemann, AquaMedic or something with strong, real m80 ballasts, then there will be more light output. If it is a Chinese fixture like Odyssea or something, then there will be less output.

A PAR meter might help to decide how high to hang it if you can borrow one.

I have 36 inch 2 halide Spectra over a 40 breeder that is about 8 inches high. No idea if that will work for everybody. This 40g is plumbed into a bigger system, so I have no idea if that would much or anything.
