My buddy has a 210 that he's picking up Friday, I am helping him set it up Sunday. He is getting the tank off Craigslist and we looked at it today, he is receiving 190 lbs of live rock, 120 lbs of live sand and a complete set up. We went to the lfs today and they had a sailfin tang that's about 2 inches or smaller nose to tail, it was on sale for 20$ so he bought it. It is in my 55 until his tank is cycled which shouldn't take Long with the already cycled filter, rock, and sand. He is trying to keep at least 120 gallons of the water. So how long can this guy live in my 55?

I think you're fine housing the sailfin for the time being. Think of it this way...how big was the tank he was in at the LFS? Probably a lot smaller than your 55. Feed him well and transfer him when the tank is good and cycled.

The fish will be just fine for the month or so. However, used sand, once disturbed, needs to be tossed out or rinsed extremely well before being re-used.

It would all depend on what and how much you feed him. You'll be ok for a year or so.

Only keep enough water to keep the rocks covered while you transfer. There is nothing beneficial in the water, it won't speed up your mini cycle by re using it. Be careful not to stir up the sand when you put water back into the tank, it may be a good time to put in all new sand and just keep a cup or two of the old sand. Male sure you remove all rock and water from the tank before you move too, you don't want to crack the tank by trying to move it with some in it.

New plan. I paid for the sailfin anyway and I was thinking, I am going to keep him for 1-2 months and then give him to my local reef farm/store. They have a 900 gallon tang and reef tank. No corals or lights on it yet but they have 5-6 tangs and clowns and she would look great in there
