How long do you wait before naming your fish?

I know not everybody names their fish, especially when they first get them as there was always a risk of losing something. Once you name an animal you tend to be more fond of it as well so losing them after naming them can be harder to deal with. For me with fish specifically I do a two to three month waiting period before even thinking of naming it. Sometimes it'll go longer if I just can't think of anything, then whenever my friends kids come by I give them the opportunity to name them as they always come up with something creative.

I wait a couple months like you, sometimes I wait less depending on how hardy the fish is

Forever. I quit naming fish years ago because named fish were always the first to die. Now they have names like purple, naso and mingii

In general, I name my fish once they finish quarantine with me and go into my DT.

That said... I avoided naming my two new purple tilefish for almost two months while they were both sick, fighting flukes and secondary infections. I eventually gave in because I'd gotten attached to them even without names.

So I named them Jelly and Bean. Sadly, Bean didn't make it, but I don't regret naming him at all. I wanted him to have a name and be remembered properly instead of just saying that "the larger tilefish didn't make it".

Now Jelly carries his name too, and I've renamed him JellyBean. I think it's beautiful and I'm actually glad I named them before Bean passed.
