How many have built an overflow and sump?

ball, valve on the overflow, never woulda thought of that. I've got 1 on the return.
That way you control your flow otherwise it gurgles and it is very frustrating.... I had one of these same systems on my nano and learned after lots of experimenting on how to fix it! The only other way is to let more water in with more drilled holes or slots. But then you run the risk of overrunning your return pump... NOT GOOD!

You can see a couple more picture in my build thread if you have any interest.

I made my own external overflow for my 220. It's all glass with a bean animal drain.

I like this overflow because it only takes 1.5" x 4" in the tank and has 20" of surface skimming.

I also built my rock background. So its all but invisible in the tank.

The sump started as a standard 75 gallon tank. I cut out the center brace and made my own baffles for fuge, mechanical, skimmer+ algae scrubber from the skimmer outlet and return pump.

P.S. Algae and skimmer is my only filtration.

I have this exact same build... All you are missing is a ball valve so you can control how much water is coming down the pvc piping...
Put a ball valve on the overflow pipe and raised it to about 1" above the waterline, 95% quieter. thx for the tip, it worked great.
