Had a geo calcium reactor running good for 8 months now. I've been manually topping off magnesium, but want to add some sort of media to the reactor to supplement this going forward. I'm just not sure what type of media/ brand to use and more importantly how much? Is this just a add some and monitor kind of thing? Does it have to be placed throughout the media or can I just pour some on top of my Reborn CaRx media? Thanks for the help!

Have you tested your magnesium levels? Coral bones like ReBorn already contain some magnesium. I’ve never found it necessary to add a specific magnesium media to my CaRx.

I don’t test it very often but did the other day and it was like 1100 which I feel isn’t bad for not tipping off in months. I think I may just continue topping off by hand after talking to a local Reefer friend that has a 1200gallon amazing Sps tank and he said he just tops off every so often with BRS liquid magnesium because he didn’t think the zeo mag or other mag additives worked well in calcium reactors.

I do keep a container of magnesium mix on my tank that triggers periodic dosing based on the trident reading, but it rarely runs.

I use 10% ReMag to 90% coral skeleton and my Mg tests always around 1400-1440. So as suggested by @ca1ore I am not sure it is necessary if you are running skeleton (ReBorn, Middle Keys, etc).

As to artificial media I would guess it depends which media you use.

I use ARM course and my mag drops so I had to add 1 cup of remag and it still occasionally drops. My tank seems to use mag more than others.

warning: remag depletes faster than ARM so I find myself replenishing it every 2-3 months.
