First tank, shopping the sales:
75 gallon: $120
20 gallon sump: $30
Baffles: $30
Overflow: $180
Return pump: $80
Heaters: $150
Tubing: $40
Power heads: $60
Filter sock holder for sump: $80
Aragonite Sand: $40
Various dry/seeded rocks: $200 ish
Glass panels on top instead of canopy: $40
Skimmer: $160
About to add lights: $330
RODI: $150

So about $1700 ish on the tank + RODI, spread over about a year (quickly adding up in my head so could be off)

All in about $22/gallon, which I understand is definitely at the lower end.

Albeit ignoring test kits, salt, Refractometer etc. probably closer to $25/gallon including those.

So I have got my first tank yet but I am planning on getting a 15 gallon innovative marine cube tank and am planning on spending about $445+fish on the tank total. I wondering how much other people spent on their first tank?
Someone's significant other make a phantom R2R acct?

55gal rimmed glass tank in 2005. Couldn't tell you the exact number but I was 15 so it wasn't much. The whole setup with livestock was probably less then what I spend on a single light nowadays

My first tank was a Waterbox 20-gallon AIO. I spent well over $1,500 on it. Ecotech MP10, XR15, rocks, sand, tank, stand, RODI, mixing station, salt, and pre-QT fish. In my current tank I probably have that amount just in fish...

When I told my wife I wanted to set up a fish tank with our grandson so we could share a hobby I’ve enjoyed my entire life. She said “okay but I know you, don’t go crazy”. Yeah, we’ll just leave it at that

just getting back into this after over a decade.. but remembering working weeks on end back in high school saving to set up my 20 long with used T5s, live rock and sand that my biology teacher donated to me, HOB equipment I had from freshwater setups years past… with livestock and all I think that set up amounted to around $200-300 after a few months.

My current build is easily 3x that

About $1k on a 40 breeder setup. But what I consider my 1st official setup will be $10-15k. It’s a 260g setup.

Zero. A neighbor owned a LFS and had a garage full of aquariums. He gave me one when I was a kid. (1960 something)

I'm in the same boat right now. Here is my suggestion:
Tank for a Grandson- Link!

He could learn to swim there too!
