How to make Xenia pulse

I have heard so different opinions about why a xenia wouldn't pulse. What are your 3 main reasons why they don't pulse?

I only have one: flow

The more flow you increase, the less the effect. Staying between low to medium flow gives the best results.

I am by no means an expert on anything saltwater yet but I will agree with flow based on what I’ve seen with mine. I have a 20 gallon AIO with a decent amount of Xenia. They are always pulsing and doing well. I tried to add a small wave maker at one point and as soon as I did those things closed up and obviously hated it. I removed it and then they were fine again.

Flow will stop visible pulsing, but I believe some colonies pulse and some don’t; regardless of flow.
