So i'm building a sump for my new 27G cube and my space is very limited under the stand so im gonna be using a 15G high tank. i'm gonna have minimal rock in the DT with a snowflake eel which is a very messy creature. I'm gonna pack my sump with as much rock and chaeto and a deep sand bed so i can have killer nitrate filtration. anyways im building the sump tonight and need to know, how wide is the average skimmer? right now im gonna be using a HOB skimmer in the sump but eventually wanna upgrade so im planning ahead. im thinking making the return area only 4" which i think should be fine for a small skimmer. but what do you guys think? can i make it 3"? 3.5"

I would figure out which skimmer you want first, then build it around that.
I would do the same. They come in all sizes 4'' 6'' and up but then you have to figure in the pump size if its not a space saver... Find the skimmer first and build around it.

If he wasn't being sarcastic, that was the funniest "not supposed to be funny" response I have read.

Use a waterfall algae scrubber for nitrate elimination!
