Welcome to R2R and the wonderful folks, information and help.
Patience, it is the big word around here, Reefing is patience to cycle, to watch things grow, to keep your tank balanced.
I recommend to everyone joining to create a tank build thread.
1. You get to see where you have started and how much you have grown in this hobby.
2. We love pictures and to see what your doing with your tank.
3. It’s a great learning tool for all of us to see what works and doesn’t . We learn great stuff from each other.
Lastly the only bad question here is the one not asked...

Thank you! I've got a question (or several) for ya - my tank is only fish, crabs, shrimp, and snails at the moment, but I'm trying to get my chemistry game in line before I start my first real build from scratch. I've been using the API Master Kit (I know, I know) and everything has been on point since the first cycle. Today, I added the Reef Kit to the testing regime, and while pH is still in line at 8.2, the dKH is way up at 20. I figured that must be wrong and tested twice. Still 20.

What the heck is going on there? Could it be a faulty test kit? Why would the dKH be so high when my pH is just fine?

Most of the resources I've found have info about raising the dKH, but not lowering it. Does this even matter if it's not actually a reef tank, yet?

What reef salt are you using? FOWLR tanks don't have any coral to use up your dKH so you won't find much on lowering it as coral tanks are using it up and need to raise it. Also if it's not your reef salt, how is your RODI system?

Yeah, I think I'm just a bit ahead of myself. I don't have coral, but am planning my first reef build, so I'm trying to familiarize myself with the reef testing kit. This inherited tank has had the same source water (artesian well)/salt mix (Oceanic) from the beginning and I never knew there was an issue with the dKH until I tested for it. I'm currently researching RODI options for the upgrade. :)

Ah yes, I am doing the same myself. I only have softies in my tank. Planning on a larger tank soon and going to try my hand at LPS so I have been testing my current tank to get practice with the test kits before it counts. Lots of threads on RODI systems and making your own water around here. I just got mine after 2 years of lugging 10 gal every 2 weeks from the LFS. Went with a water saver unit so I am not creating as much 'waste" water to get my clean water.
