Hurt fish

I have a cardinal fish that was picked on over night. His fins have been nipped and he is laying in the sand. He ate when I fed and can still kinda swim. I do not have a QT set up yet. Could I put him in my sump to separate them?

If you have enough space in the sump with nothing that will attack him then yes try that.
Otherwise a divider or a breeder net could work.
Clean water is the best way to heal, have an antibiotic and other meds ready in case it gets infected.

Not a good news. If u have a clean up crew it will take care of the fish remains. Else keep an eye on ammonia levels. There will be a spike if fish remains start to rot.

You can tear the tank apart to find it, but at this point I’d assume it died overnight and became invert food. That or it’s hiding very well.
Not much you really can do if you can’t find him.
Do a water change to help counter the spike caused by the body.

I do not have any invertebrates in the aquarium. It is just fish right now, so I will need to do water changes if I cannot find the remains correct?

Are there scavenging fish?
If you don’t have inverts or any scavengers, I’d try to find it. Speaking from experience, it gets really bad if you don’t find it.

I have two yellow tail damsels
Two black and white clowns
Was 3 now 2 cardinals.

My wife just exited me and said that the other two cardinals look like they have been being nipped at. I am thinking the hallow tails are getting at them.

It was the two yellow tail nipping at the other fish. They have since been removed. Do I need to dip the fish or add medication to the tank? I do not have a AT tank that I can use.

Those two don’t look bad. Fish heal pretty easily. Watch the cardinals, they tend to be aggressive to any that it it isn’t paired with. It very well could have been them. Damsels and clowns can be rough too.
I’d go looking for the dead one.

with damsels out these fish should get relaxed. if possible keep the lights dim and add fish vitamins to their food.
you should get some snails as well so that you can feed bit more at least till they are in top shape again.

I’ve looked for two hours moved rock and looked in the sump. Can’t find him could they have eaten him?

Yes that is likely, fish tend to scavenge. It also could have jumped, so check around the tank.

I put the damsels in a filter cup in the sump so I don’t have to catch them again. I looked around the tank but I’m gonna look more tomorrow. I didn’t want to turn the lights up too much. I also dosed some good bacteria to help with the ammonia increase just in case.
