So I have been researching but I just want to fact check this with r2r. So I do have BJD in my tank, hoping to eliminate it. I would just do Coral dips, but the problem is that it if infecting my kenya trees, but before this, is propagated itself so I have lots of Kenya trees just in crevices of the rock so I cant get it out too well to dip them, so I was hoping for a full tank dosage. My lfs told me there was this product that they usually have, they were sold out, for BJD and it was a full tank dosage, so I went ahead and started researching. I found Cipro, and it seems to get the problem solved. But I am unsure as to how to dose it, and if I even should. My plan is to remove my carbon and turn of protien skimmer, and then dose it as lights turn off. I would do this for 7-10 days, and after the last day do a 25%ish water change. I am also completely baffled by the dosing instructions and how even to do so, so could you explain it to me? Also, are there anything that it could kill that I have in my tank, like, for example, copepods, fish, corals, feather dusters, brittlestars, any invert. Also, my final question, is would it kill bacterial algaes, like cyano?

Old skool. iodine or peroxide bath. You need to treat in a different system. You cannot treat in your display. This needs to be done in a separate system ie quarantine

As above, There are no shortcuts, ie algae, cyano. There are no fancy labled bottles (snake oils) that will make things easier. You deal with one issue at a time and don't expect a daily fix. Patience, correct things and have patience. Ciprofloxacin needs to be used in quarantine

Yes skimmer off and remove carbon. I’ve done in tank treatment of cipro over the years.

I had to take my specs off to read that post!
Nice cube 👍

I still wouldn't use ciprofloxacin in a reef. It can effect so much inc microbiome. Just saying

Well just got one question. I read bright lighting can cause it to degrade. Wouldn’t that mean I need to dose more every night?

Thanks, I’ve used this formula 3 times, saved a lot of euphyllia and it never caused a problem. I didn’t keep cipro on hand the first time bjd reared its ugly head when I returned from vacation. I watched as the last of my torches, hammers and frogspawn turn to brown goo. Now I always have some and if used quickly it saves all the LPS.

This is how I used it all 3 times and it worked great.

One last question, how would I exactly dose it. I see that they come in capsules. Do I just grind it up and add it to the water. I also read that you add it to RODI water and then add the RODI water. Or is it just water-soluble and don't need to grind it up?

Ok so I found that you can get it on dr reefs. How many 500 mg tablets do you think I should get for a 33 gallon? I am asking this because I see on the link you provided it talks about 500mg for 20 gal, but dr reefs says one 500mg for 10 gal.

They dissolve rapidly in Ro/Di water.

I would get the whole bottle to have some if needed later. You’ll one and half tablets. 500 mg per 20 gallons worked great for me. Were they talking about hospital tank treatment or in the display tank?

Ok, I have done a ton of research on BJD and the use of Cipro, KFC, etc. As I have many various LPS corals, including some very expensive torches, hammers, frammers, frogspawns and kingspawns, and want to keep them alive and well. So I have been through all of this a few times, and can answer most questions for you.

First you CAN indeed dose an entire tank, and using CIPRO will not harm anything in your tank. If you have a coral in your tank that has BJD on it, you already have the bacterial virus in your tank, and you need to treat the tank. Second, you are correct, you must have a prescription to get CIPRO. There are a couple places online that sell it without a prescription, BUT you pay huge marked up prices for the convenience. Do yourself a favor and just go to your vet and get a prescription for it.

to mix it for dosing an entire tank, you'll crush up one 500mg tablet very very fine, and the mix with with 50ml of ro/di water. shake well until dissolved. Keep it in a air tight bottle in your fridge for keeping it long term. the dosage for your tank ranges from .075ml - .125ml per gallon of tank water. You'll want your skimmer and and UV off, dose at night when the lights go down, as light WILL degrade the CIPRO effectiveness.

If you need anything else feel free to reach out.

I did go ahead and order some from dr reefs, so I am going to wait for delivery. But thank you for the great information!

I'd be curious to know how they manage to sell an FDA approved, "prescription only" drug..but I digress. At $5.99 a pill, they are making bank. I picked up a bottle of twelve 500mg tablets from my Vet for $25.

Anyway, I keep a bottle of "Cipro" mixed up at all times and kept in my fridge. Since I have over 2 dozen Euphyllia in my reef tank, I do a maintenance dose every 2 weeks. I have not had any BJD on anything going on two years.
