Hello all

I was at RAPNY yesterday and had a very interesting discussion with one of the online vendors I regularly work with. I was telling him about recurring brown jelly disease that kept popping up in my torch garden. I told him I tried iodine, Cipro, Chemiclean and water changes. It stopped for a time but popped up again weeks later. What I found interesting was that he said when dosing Cipro, you should dose daily for about a week. He said that when a doctor prescribes an antibiotic, you usually need to take it for at least a week to see results. That sounded very logical to me. I’ve heard that overuse of Cipro can cause resistance to the antibiotic but the logic is hard to deny. I’ve been dosing 1000mg per outbreak one time. I have a 65 gallon DT with an 80 gallon total volume. I know torches are finicky creatures but I’d really like a “go to” preventative system that works. Flow and lighting are good and all my other euphyllia and LPS are doing fine. What have been your experiences and what do you think of this advice? TIA

I disagree with daily applications , in fact with use of cipro unless absolutely necessary. While i have seen some recovery with cipro, ive seen more ill effects from its use. Its an alternative, not a solution in most cases. BJD is often a result of stress and often can be from a change in salinity, temperature and salt mixes. Additionally, Elevated phosphate, light and even new light and elevated alkalinity levels will be a higher risk to coral. Other minor factors will be low Dissolved oxygen, new corals especially leathers (which emit a toxin known as Terpenes), false test kit readings and newly added rock can alter chemistry.

The typical dose for fish is 9.5 to 19 mg/Gallon, daily for 5 days, but with 50% water changes between doses. This is from Lewbart, 1997.

I cannot answer your question exactly, but I can offer than IME, extended use of algaecides and antibiotics in the tank mess up the tanks biomme, and the longer you add it to your tank the longer it takes for the tank to recover.

I'm not a torch guy, but I know some folks that are able to keep torches without fear of brown jelly. I would seek advice from those folks instead of from folks that regularly need to fight brown jelly.

Iodine can easily be overdosed and not recommended as a cure but rather as a dip
I agree. If treating frags iodine should be enough and if not the frag can/probably should be tossed. I'm on board with not using antibiotics as a dip. It might be a different story if it were a massive colony I'd been growing for years but in general... Don't you need an rx for ciprofloxin?

In some cases, yes
