Hello reef people! I just rescued a tank that was days from self destructing. It was hardly recognizable. At the point I got it at, it was just a big . . . algae. We somehow found the 7 major inhabitants and scrubbed the tank, rocks, and sand and sure enough it was full of life that somehow survived the neglect and the 4 hour transfer process to their new home. This is my first fish tank ever. Two weeks ago I knew absolutely nothing about it so I have quite the knowledge and practice mountain to climb. Could anyone help me on my journey by identifying one of my fish and this weird thing on this rock? I scientifically record everything in my tank and cannot for the life of me identify these things.

It's very exciting to get into the hobby/lifestyle and just as exciting to participate in the community. Hello everyone! Glad to be here!

Awesome stuff! Filefish kept the pesky aptasia at bay. Think the coral might be a leather/Toadstool they are hearty little corals. Take another pic and congrats on the rescue it looks amazing!

Welcome to R2R! Looking forward to seeing more form this amazing transformation:)

Wow! That's quite a job you have ahead of you. I'm new to the board also, but this is the place to find answers. There are tons of places to do your research, but I guarantee you someone will be on here shortly to show you the way to get experts to answer your questions and point you in the right direction! Keep the pictures coming, they will keep people's attention and people on here might be able to spot things you don't realize need attention! Good luck, this hobby is addicting.

Welcome to the party! Definitely a file fish. The other, tell us more about it, hard or soft, fleshy? Can you get a different picture? My first thought was a skeleton of something like a euphyllia.

Thanks for all the welcomes! That was quick with the ID on the fish!

I felt it with my fish net because I'm not sure what the proper procedure is for such. I know lots of these critters sting and the likes. It is rigid but it gives under pressure like a tough rubber. My intuition tells me it is living but I can't get an interaction that confirms my suspicion. There seems to be a dead shell of one not far from it but I can't be sure.

Also! To those who might be interested in before and after pictures . . . (sorry about the quality, I didn't take them with the intention of sharing them and the before picture was sent from previous owner)
Everyone's enthusiasm has already rekindled my excitement all over again. What an awesome community!
