I have a 380 gallon tank and I am trying to figuring out what pumps I will need to handle the flow. I would like to go with the Cor 20 for my return pump as I will be installing the entire Apex system and want the controlability it brings. The problem is my equipment room will be about 40 feet away from my tank and I will have about 5-6 feet of vertical head pressure as well as some 90 and 45 degree elbows and a T.

After some research, I don’t think the Cor 20 will have enough power to accomplish this task. It’s rated at 2000 GPH and up to 20 feet of head pressure and I will have head loss of about 12 feet. I want about 3x turnover which is roughly 900 gallon per hour.

-Can some of you smart and experienced reefers explain the how all this works with head pressure and loss of flow for me?

-Would I be able to run 2 Cor 20 pumps together in tandem and get double the flow which would make it possible to
get the needed flow?

-Would running 1.5 or 2 inch pipe for my return help?

Thanks for your help and advice

Every 1' of vertical= 1'
Every 10' of horizontal = 1'
Every 90 degree turn = 1'
Every 45 degree turn = 0.5'

Add that all up and then reference the head loss for the COR20 to get max gph. I suspect you'll need at least two COR20's or something even more powerful like an Abyzz.

Both the Abyzz A200-10m and Varios 10 will get you there and they both have integrated Neptune control. One is more pricy than the other. If you sacrificed the Neptune control you could get 1 of the external pump but then those are electricity hogs. I just don't think you will get the results you are looking for with the COR pumps. I can tell you from experience as I run a COR 20... these pumps need to be cleaned frequently or they start to loose gph. I have to clean mine out every month. And I've had my COR replaced 3 times already and its the same thing. The pumps are always clean when I take them out to clean but for some reason it needs to be super clean. My Varios that runs my skimmer and another tank I maintenance could care less if they are dirty. Haven't been cleaned in over a year. Just keeps pumping.

In my equipment room, my UV is going to be a Pentair 150 Watt unit that is 6 feet tall. Remember in my first post I said my equipment room was about 40 feet away from my display tank. For this UV flow, what kind of an effect will the flow be on that pump that feeds it with the water having to travel up about 6- 7 feet to feed the UV and then drop down several feet and traveling the 40 feet to the display tank up another 3-4 feet into the display tank?

How do you calculate the correct flow when water travels in different elevations from the sump area going 40 feet and then finally ending up into the display tank?

Thanks for your input.

For the UV you could get a flow sensor from Neptune and put it on right before the UV, that way you know what the flow is going through, and you can adjust accordingly. The core 20 or 15 would probably be a good fit for this application.

Up is positive and down is negative. All you need to measure is the deference of height between the level of water at the two locations.

So if my water level goes up to 6 feet and then goes down 3 feet and then ultimately goes back up to a 6 foot height, then in reality, my head pressure for the vertical measurement is only a gain of 6 feet total?

Yes but the total pipe length will be used in the friction loss calculations.
