I don't know if anyone has had this experience but It seems i can make Cyanobacteria come and go on will. It seems it is a relationship with phosphates and nitrates. My nitrates are around 3-4 ppm and pretty stable for the last few months. When my phosphates read around .03-.04 no Cyano. Change out my GFO and drive down phosphates to .01 and boom Cyano. I have done this at least 4 times and same outcome. Anyone else seen this relationship?

Yes

Do you have any hair algae? Whenever I change my gfo, hair algae dies off. I was unsure if it is the lowering of the phosphate that is feeding the cyano, or if the dying HA feeds it, but I definitely notice it gets worse when I change gfo.

No I have almost no algae at all. Tank is 1 year old.

I have been letting my gfo reactor slowly clog over the past few weeks and haven't replenished gfo in order to test this theory, but I do think there is something to it.
