So yea, I bought a mirrorless Sony Alpha a7R V. I also got a Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens. I didn't go with a macro lens (yet) because I wanted to prioritize wider shots and 4k video. I also sold the wife on family shots lol. Macro lens will come soon.

Anyone use / have this camera? And advice on settings for shooting reef shots? I heard with mirrorless there's less need for a yellow filter. Regardless, I'm pumped! (new addiction started)

You can manually set the white balance in the settings which might make the image look better out of the box, but I would be shooting RAW files which can be edited appropriately anyway.

I still think orange filters make sense when trying to get nice images under heavy blue lights, but it really depends on what look you are going for.

Just play around, have fun, and you will find your style and workflow :)

If you don't want to invest in photoshop I can recommend Affinity Photo. It's a one-time purchase and gets the job done. You can opt for a macro lens once you have got a good feeling for the camera.

Thanks! What filter would you recommend for the large lenses like this? I have one for my camera but it's small. The one that comes with the avast portal is not the right color imo. It's more yellow than orange.

I assume you will find a rather cheap 77mm (should be the size of that lens) orange filter online that can be put on the lens. Maybe also a polarization filter to remove reflection from the glass.

I can't name a specific brand, I think I bought one from Neewer back then, but I'm not sure. It's been a while since I have used it, as I'm currently using my camera exclusively for my microscope.

Thanks! There's definitely an art to it! I've watched a lot of videos to self educate and it's helped. Will watch this one too. Below is my most recent video :) getting better.

I have both a macro fe 2.8/90 and a fe 4/24-105.

The video above was on the macro lense but the tank is 30" deep so it looks wider haha.

And yes, I bought an orange filter. Since my macro lense is smaller diameter than a standard lens I had to also purchase a step down adapted plate.
