Ich breakout in 400g

Active management can probably work but it's like living on the edge with no safety margin. You would probably need a large Tank with lower-than-average Fish Load and a large UV setup for Parasite Eradication with adequate turnover and inlet water pulled from the Tank itself.
The main problem as I see it is a single stressor event could Trigger an Outbreak. Events like a Power Outage, Equipment Failure, adding a new Fish. etc.

One last thing is moving water. Not many stagnant areas that can give them a hag out area until a fish swims in that area using it as a sleep spot for the evening.
 
I read this comment as suggesting that ick/flukes must be eradicated versus letting it exist in the tank with active management (UV, etc). Is this actually true? I ask because I'm personally going through an outbreak and through all the reading and opinions I've gathered, it does seem like taking the route of active management should be viable. If people here disagree with that, I'd love to know!

The amount of cases I read about here, other forums, and even FB talkin about I did this, that and over here over there and after a few months ich came back. And the processes starts all over. And if you read what I posted there what info you get is that food alone can’t save the fish in the end. This is a statement posted by many on all kind of reef tank platforms. Feed the fish garlic and you’re good to go. Or whatever else someone can conjure up for food that “helps” take care of ich. If that was the case don’t you think even medics here would recommend it over QT?

My post is for the people that want a tank without parasites such as ich, velvet, brook. Now uronema is a bit different subject.


PS…. My last ich outbreak from a store I got algae from has ich in the algae tank. I run a 57wt direct return line UV system. Still not enough to kill the nasty disease. And I feed just about all the high end supplements, dosed Ruby rally/ kick ich, dosed Polyplab medic, peroxide, and maybe a few more things I could think of. Nothing worked it only killed my massive Duncan, and ticked odd the rest of my corals. Fallow period is what took care of it in the end, and QT of the fish. And no I didn’t dose all at once like a maniac haha. It was within time periods. Running carbon at proper times. Nothing helped in the end.

Hello all a few weeks back I noticed my tank had an ich breakout in my farm tank. An achilles is among them… i started feeding nori super super heavy and it all went away. Today i was feeding and noticed the tank had another breakout and i wanted ti ask for more opinions on what should be done. I have added a video of how my achilles looks today right before posting this thread. Pls let me know if I should continue to feed heavy or is there no chance they will survive in the tank. Everyones still eating and all fish were properly qt before added. I will say once I went back to normal feeding of frozen and nori once or twice a day the breakout happened again.

Firstly, I'm discussing this from the perspective of curiosity not challenge that I know better. Just want to make that clear.

The thing that strikes me as incomplete here you say it failed for you and for many others on this forum. But there's got to be a lot more where it just comes and goes. And on top of that, many stores likely have some level of the disease in their systems that you have to assume they've got into some form of management.

Eradication is obviously and without question the ideal outcome, and management will never achieve that. But eradication comes with its own risks and challenges and people do lose fish due mostly to mistakes made during the process.

For me I hope to build a tank closer to @Paul B school of thought, which requires letting your system take on whatever the ocean throws at it. I assume Paul doesn't run eradication protocols every time he adds something to his tank.

All of this is completely anecdotal of course and undoubtedly I am inexperienced, but it makes me feel like eradication shouldn't necessarily be the described as the only option for everyone. Or at least I don't think it deserves to be frowned upon?

Yes throwing the ocean would be nice. And I’m not here to say it does not work as stated if you do everything to the T. The fact is we don’t have an ocean other than a part of it. To compare disease issues in reef tanks vs ocean that would be another thread.

And not all can afford what works for others. Again my only brining up of others including me is because it happens on a regular that a tank gets infected and fish end up dead. Once I got QTing down to the T it has far less of an headache vs watching fish dies because of diseases. And this thread is about ich. What about velvet? Can you or any one guarantee that it will be only ich coming in on ich? Velvet far deadlier makes the statement of QT a far better option if dead fish in a tank is what we want to avoid. If it’s dead fish we are looking for….. well I guess that person does him.

And I to was a just let the tank do what it must. And lost too many fish and decided I’m not in the game of not trying my darn best to do the best by the fish I have on my hands. But to each their own. I will advocate for QT at all times vs managment. And I get that some do not have that option. At all, and why is say management can be done but…. 50/50.


And it’s not frowned upon, more like advised against if possible. It’s why I think Jay even had a management article somewhere here I recall reading.
