I have an island of Xenia and GSP. They seem to have receded a bit lately and I noticed these hard tube structures in the open areas. I caught a pic of a fan coming out of some. Are these feather dusters? Can they irritate their neighbors? Or is this something else that may be causing my recession issues. The other option may be my recent added emerald crab picking away at the coral. Thoughts?

Looks like a feather duster. They're harmless filter feeders. I bet it's your emerald crab, they're known to be trouble makers.
