This was at the bottom of the plug and couldn't see it until a snail knocked it over

I tried looking it up and came to the same conclusion. Do I need to take out?

I wouldn't worry about it really. Its been exposed to air so the there's a chance it'll die off.
In my experience, the white encrusting ones don’t really die when exposed to air.

I was worried that it was eating them

The sponge can’t eat zoas. It might smother it and prevent it from growing though
