They only call when “It’s broken” and are annoyed and frustrated with their situation and you get to listen to them. I often have to see the client’s mess in person, remote work can provide helpful insulation when they call.

I want to move out but I think I would miss it too if we did.

The technology has become more reliable but every now and again someone like me cause a blue screen system error just to keep you employed.:face-with-hand-over-mouth::face-with-tongue:

They were promoted because they couldn’t understand the difference, and they were not able to figure out how to make it work without 6-8 hours of head scratching. They think you’re going to need that much time also.

Trying to make employees work can be as challenging as trying to reboot a system except employees don’t have a power switch.

I’ve been answering pagers, flip phones emails and cell calls since the mid 90’s and if I didn’t get OT and a vehicle to drive I would be a Barista. Unpaid labor is an abomination, while working is just slightly better when there is compensation.

They preferred to call it "salary" rather than unpaid, but yeah, wrong. At least my boss would give a half flex day per on call. whether or not we were called in (got called maybe 3 times in 4 years). So there's that. Now it's a 2-hour minimum pay per call (which pushes me into OT as well). So as long as I can wrap it up in under that, we're doing ok.

I have been the target of many attempts by my management to terminate my employment over the years and have spent many sleepless nights avoiding these efforts and with strong Union support I have always avoided termination but have suffered a few temporary home without pay episodes.

I work in an Emergency Operations Center and we are technically always on call. We do have a rotation for duty officers who answer the phone 24 hours a day during an emergency. That keeps if from being too crazy.

I’ve been in IT for over 30 years and the last 20 of those years have been in positions with routine oncall schedules. It’s exhausting but one of the oncall rotations im in pays a nice bonus so it affords me to have this hobby.

I lived in Santa Barbara from 2009-2019 for grad school. It was never permanent, but I miss it every day.

I work in anesthesia. I’m on call usually 1-2 days a week and one weekend a month. We get called out for emergencies and organ transplants pretty regularly. The last weekend I was on I ended up working 30 hours of OT. That pay definitely makes it better to afford random things for my tank and my wife doesn’t question purchases anymore. Win-win.

Make a plan and make your way back. If you think real estate prices are high now wait until you see what happens to your equity by 2035. It’s beautiful here and supply and demand keep the market moving up along with the population.

My brother was a “Gas man” but he refused to help me with reefing antibiotics.?

That’s a great job until the phone rings. I couldn’t pass the test cause I would explain my feelings; Shoot them all the and let God sort them out. I dont have the strength to shoot slower.

I just got a call to go 80 miles away to investigate a 3 gallon gasoline overfill on the other side of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area. The sun set hours ago but the evaporation rate of gasoline will have removed all traces of the fuel spilled unless someone ignited it so I can find the impact area?

Saturday I went to the beach to investigate smuggling boats but they also evaporated before I arrived?

Tonight I was trying to sleep when dispatch rang with tonight’s nonsense that has me awake and wondering;

To all the IT people who answered this:

Today we had a meeting where one of our most senior responders basically spent 3 hours patting himself and our office on the back for being “the best in the country”. Yet all of the more humble peoplee know its our IT guy who is behind all of it. Not only is he the only person who is actually available 24/7 but he also basically runs everything.

I hope he’s on duty when they drag in my carcass for emergency medical attention. I thought I might be checking in after I got punctured while cleaning up the reef last week. Some of the infections that might get us are not common in the population.
