I do not know why they put it there, but to prevent microorganism growth is likely.

Another question I am curious if youhave thoughts on. Reef energy has ribose in it, and I found this powder on amazon

Nutricost D-Ribose 700mg (2800mg Per Serving), 240 Capsules

Thoughts on adding this to a custom coral food blend? Does the D mean deoxy? Wouldn't this simply create a carbon dosing effect?

The D is an indication of the exact 3D shape. I have no reason to think corals benefit from this in the water, but I do not know. Bacteria will consume it, so it will have an effect on them.
