A few weeks ago, I started noticing a few small snails die, which I didn’t make a huge amount of, but then four days ago I came down to find my cleaner shrimp, dead (he had just molted three days ago), and today I came down to find my emerald crab dead, so obviously now I’m concerned there’s something wrong. I have a rock boring urchin, a strawberry conch, and a handful of other snails and hermits that seem to be OK for now. Parameters tested at the Fish store on their machine the day the shrimp died:

Salinity 1.025
pH 8
Ca 429
Mg 1215
Ammo 0
Nitrate 6
Phos 0.02

Today’s parameters are pending, need to carve out time to test everything. Only thing that changed since then is I added magnesium to bump it up, and I think I did one water change (instant ocean salt, RODI water from the grocery store). It’s a 32 gallon Fluval AIO with upgraded return pump. Having an algae issue and some corals don’t look super happy but fish seem to be doing fine.

What am I missing? I ordered a seachem copper test today that will get here in 2 days. Other than that what am I doing wrong it’s getting really disheartening. Thanks for any input

Forgot to mention I treated the tank with reeflux yesterday, after the shrimp died but before the emerald crab died, could that have done it? I had treated a few months ago and nothing was affected so hoping thats not it.

Also temp 79 with an inkbird.

I treated my tank for 4 weeks with Reeflux and never lost any inverts. Did you use real live rock or start with dry? There may be something killing them.

Check magnets and pumps.

I doubt that copper test is of any use for this. ICP is what one would order to test copper as well as other heavy metals.

Do you use any peroxide?

Live rock from LFS, started the tank about 7 months ago. Shrimp and crab were both in the tank for at least several weeks before suddenly dying.

When I check them what am I looking for? Do I have to take them apart and look for rust? ICP test is next on my checklist. That will check for all relevant heavy metals? No never used peroxide.

Can we see a tank pic? My first thoughts are water quality or low oxygen? But tank pics often provide some clues.

Yea, you are just looking for any swelling or cracks around the magnet housings.

Nice tank, I see nothing here. I'll just say that snails die, they stuck themselves in rocks, flip themselves over..... I've tried emerald crabs twice and they both died at the 6 month mark so I stopped trying. I don't think you have an issue, but the cleaner shrimp dying I think is coincidence that maybe to you seems all related, but I don't think they are related to one cause. I think its coincidence, but who am I lol I wish you good luck.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Hopefully it is just bad luck :-/

Seachem copper test came back negative, but today I’m pretty sure another snail died, and my one really cool torch died :-( meanwhile my hammer is doing great. Idk what’s going on but it’s so frustrating. ICP test it is I guess, since my next step would be to get a package of CUC from reefcleaners but I don’t want them to all just die.

My cleaner shrimp would die randomly eventhough they looked liked champs. No clue what caused it since everyone else was happy. Maybe stray voltage?! Maybe collection method?! Very frustrating.

Kind of having the same issue but I think the emerald crabs eat them and I also have an icp in the mail because some corals don’t look good despite decent test results.
