Is a tiny tang a mythical creature?

A question for future stocking purposes. I would love to have a tang in the future (too many beautiful varieties to list!). But every one I've researched so far grows much too large for my 45 gallon tank. Is there such a thing as a "dwarf" or small variety of tang? Or am I going to have to tape a picture of one to the outside wall of my tank and pretend?

I wouldn't in good conscience put any tang in a 45, to be completely honest with you in my humble but relatively experienced opinion. I do think you could get away with a dwarf angel, if you'd like a fish of similar attitude and beautiful coloration options, though. Coral beauties and flame angels will both leave corals alone if well fed, but they can be mean, so add them last.

Ive seen even small “dwarf” tangs in standard 4’ tanks and they can become malicious. They usually show 0 mercy when stressed in smaller tanks. I wouldn’t even have one in my 5’ tank unless I only had one large fish (the tang).

Tomini tangs are the smallest (if I recall correctly) and even they get up to 5-6" which isn't a great fit for a 45.

You could consider buying tiny a baby tang (like the purples or sailfins you see sometimes), keeping it a few years and then selling it/trading it once it gets too big for the 45. However, those little guys need a decent amount of care (at least initially) and I, personally, wouldn't be able to trade it away after raising it.

I put a small bristletooth in my 50g. Outgrew the tank in less than a year. Tangs grow fast and the bigger they get the more territorial.

I personally would avoid putting a tang in a 45g; they will outgrow that tank.

I settled for a coral beauty in my 32. It’s not a tang, but it fits the tank and is doing very well. One day, I’ll convince my wife we need the bigger tank. Until then…

There's always the temporary Tang housed until house too small then gets rehomed. Tang Police will likely still issue a citation but I know a good lawyer that can get you off easy peasy... :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:
