I think the first time I had to opening a canister I used a strap wrench to hold the unit in place while my son pushed hard on the BRS tool used to turn the canister. Subsequent openings have been much easier and I can do it myself. The first time was challenging though!

Plus it really does help if the whole thing is screwed down to something solid/unmoving so you can turn all your attention to the wrench.

I can't screw these set ups into anything, unfortunately. There's no garage or any kind of working area, just the various living spaces. I'm in an apartment.

ever have a hard time opening a jar of pickles or something? tap the lid and it makes it easier.. now.. I'm not saying beat the crap out of it on the ground or anything but maybe give it a couple little love taps..

another thing that can help: vibration reduces friction, it's basically how impact drivers work

vibrating the canister assembly while simultaneously trying to open it should make it easier to actually get it loose. you want relatively strong vibrations so your phone probably won't be enough to help noticeably, probably want to err on the side of hitachi clam rattler or better

I used a strap wrench and positioned it so that the end of the handle was a few inches off of the floor when I stood on the metal bracket attached to the canister. I then stood on the bracket and pushed done on the strap wrench handle with my other foot. I slowly put enough weight on the wrench to move the canister. As noted earlier, I didn't jam the canister back on the bracket when I replaced it and I haven't have any subsequent issues getting it off.

Had some of their canisters show up last year not only over tightened but also missing the gaskets which I didn't notice until it made a huge mess. They did ship new gaskets after I emailed.

I CrossFitted for 10 years but stopped when I moved out of NYC last fall. I'm definitely weak now.

So it has been a ongoing issue for a long time. Something we all deal with.
With my ro/di cannisters ( carbon block and sediment filter-10" ) the cannisters can be difficult to unscrew.
On mine, the whole unit is fastened down very well to a board hung on my garage wall. That gives it the stability so I can concentrate on dealing with the plastic cannister wrench. Most of the time I put the wrench in place and just slam my hand against it to loosen the cannister. It can be pretty violent. But that just what I have to do.

I keep seeing people talk about the regular rodi size ones...those arent bad. The jumbo one is on a different level of hard to open lol. I just sat it on the floor with my foot on the white bracket for leverage and got it to open. It took some yeah come on...but it came loose.

I tried holding it down on the floor by standing on the bracket, but the bracket kept sliding!

I thought mine may have been a one off but mentioned to my wife...if it wasnt..a lot of people are going to have a hard time. For real....its way too tight on there.

Hope you know that I was joking. LOL. Don't use your muscles, use tools.

All you have to do is screw the canister bracket to a piece of wood. Set it somewhere it doesn't spin. Sometimes, I just put the bracket on the ground, and stand on it. The key is to put the canister wrench on the body of canister. And tap the wrench handle with a mallet and it'll loosen. It is super simple. Don't even need muscles.
