Is frogspawn really that difficult?

Last time I went to the reef store the lady talked me out of what I really wanted which was some frogspawn, saying it was hard to care for. Instead she said a torch was easier so that’s what I got. My torch is very healthy and happy and seems like an easy coral…but I really still want the frogspawn

Are they really that hard? I just love the bubbly look and fluorescent dots.

Otherwise I was thinking bubble tip anemone since it sort of has a similar look but I know that would potentially wander around the tank. Plus it’s totally different, not stony. Idk

In my tanks, hammer coral has been virtually unkillable (and I have killed plenty of corals). They can handle really dirty water and a variety of lighting, from one thumb sized plug i have grown large-watermelon sized colonies that I periodically have to prune. In fact, I kept hammers in a tank I used to just top off with tap water, and my tap water is like 350 TDS (thanks LA). The one thing I have noticed is they love flow. Not enough and they struggle. Give em flow and they thrive. Every tank is different, but I’ve had way more success with hammers than torches. PM me and I’ll send you some. Thats how much I have growing.

My last tank before it broke I had so much frogspawn I was giving it away. It was easy for me but the difference with a torch is Flow! Frogspawn likes it gentle whereas torch like to get whipped around. If you have good water quality and decent lighting you should have no problems.

If you can do a torch you can do a frogspawn.

Torches these days are more in cost then a frogspawn

My torch doesn’t appear to eat anything I give it. I feed daily (for the fish) but also give all the corals some as well. I haven’t tried big chunks of anything but I’ve tried mysis, tiny TDO pellets, benepets powder, crab pellets, etc.

Still I will keep trying because they could be eating but it’s just not obvious.

Same, I haven’t noticed any of my torches really appreciate a feeding.

Some of my hammers will gladly accept meaty chunks of stuff like music, but most will slime up and let the food float away. Weird! So far I cay it’s mostly the indo hammers with the longer tips that seem to like to eat.

Yeah mine might slime up a bit with the powdered food but that’s about it.

Of Euphyllia, and the new Caryophylliidae which was formerly Euphyllia, most corals are on the easier side of hard corals. Frogspawn is both hardy and fast growing, while most hammers grow slower but are just as hardy and torch is both slow and delicate. I sold a lot of Frogspawn the first few years in the hobby and only stopped once I got an angel that ate LPS. The angel is gone now, so I will probably get back into it.

One thing I have noticed is that Frogspawn either does really well in tanks or really badly. I went through a few phases where I just couldn't keep it at all. If this is a specific tank parameter, I am not sure what it was. I don't think it is related to overall stability, as I have a huge tank and am lazy with water changes. So it is possible your LFS is correct to say it is very hard for them to keep, but it will probably do well in your system.

Frogspawn is the cheapest and fastest growing LPS, so I'd encourage you to try a small frag and see what happens.

Never had an issue with them. Figured hammers, frogspawn and torches were pretty much all on the same level.
