My miniantus grouper has a little red spot behind its fin. Is this something I should worry about? I do have some devil damsels that are super aggressive could this be caused by them or is this something worse? BA59CA7F-8588-4EFB-9D89-6D89E12ED9BF.jpeg A6739C81-FD22-4F22-98C3-2094BF772233.jpeg

Can you do a favor - can you take an arrow - and add it to your picture - and repost - I see a couple areas that seem a little more 'red' than they should be - but I don't know your fish.

In the meantime - any other water changes, tank cleaning, other fish additions, abnormal parameters?

How long have you had this fish - has it been healthy all the time?

I’ve had him maybe 2 or 3 weeks. I’m not positive if it’s been there I noticed it today. He’s in a 220 gallon with 5 damsels a snowflake eel, a starfish, snails, and some hermit crabs. He stays up top most of the time I’m around the tank. Super healthy appetite. I did move the aqua scape around yesterday. The last time the water was checked when I got him it was good. I was not the one to check it, I have a company clean the tank and check the water.

thanks - was he quarantined?

To me it looks like a wound - might have happened in transport, or in the tank?

Assuming you don't see any large parasite, etc - that could have caused it, a red wound usually is a little concerning.

The reason I wanted the pictures - is because I saw a couple red areas on the fins - that might suggest a more systemic infection. My hesitation on recommendations - is its going to be hard to move him to a quarantine tank lol. (I.m assuming he is large?).

Since you moved stuff around - it could be just that he got bumped in that area - and the fins etc that I'm looking at are just looking different due to light.

I will tag a couple others from the Medic team for their thoughts as well. In the meantime - close watching, examining the fins for any red streaking, or other 'red spots' if any worsening - probably needs a treatment. You might proactively ask your LFS if they have any antibiotic containing foods - and which ones - just in case.

He was quarantined at the lfs I got him from. But I don't have a quarantine tank so that would be pretty tough and yes hes about 8 or 9 inches. I don't see any parasites on him and he does change to a darker red usually when I feed him. He goes between the pinkish you see to a deep red and his colored spots get more of an electric blue.

I feed him silversides every 2-3 days.

I will keep an eye out and appreciate the help I hope its just a bruise

Looks like either a bite mark or post injury
Saltwater fish in nature have the ability to heal and heal quickly on their own
Keep an eye on it to assure its doing just that- healing
In the mean time, I would get either seachem neoplex or Maracyn 2 to have on hand should it show sign of infection
Both need to be administered in a Quarantine setting

Ok so I see him putting his side and fin up against a snail maybe to try and get him loose. Do we think this might be the cause?

Sorry, don't understand what you mean - do you mean to get the snail loose to 'eat' - or do you mean to itch the wound on the snail?

When to mix up fish meal: When was the last time you tried a different brand of food for your reef?
