Is my ghetto skimmer breakin method ok?

Currently running a 35g setup with a ac70 and aquaticlife 115 skimmer(way under sized I know). I will be swapping my rock and livestock into a 40b with 15g sump right after Xmas. So just over a month. Until then, I put my skimmer(sca301) in a 5g bucket with old water from my water change. I plan to run it this way till I switch everything over, and I've been dumping the wet skimate into the bucket from my 115 skimmer. Will this help break it in, or am I wasting my time?

Im doing the same almost. Useing oldwater to break in a new skimmer in a cookie jar.
