Hi guys, it’s my first time culturing phytoplankton (nannochloropsis salina)
I bought a bottle of live phytoplankton and put in two glass container, filled with new saltwater + easyphyto by easy reefs and put air to move it
I’m using 5w strip led 16 hours per day

this is my setup:

day 0:

day 1:

day 2 (today):

As you can see the color changed from intense green to a yellow-green but at the same time I can’t see anymore through the glass container

is my culture growing or just both crashed?

Phyto should get darker and darker Kelly-green

Any switch to a yellowish is dying phyto

SMELL IT.... phyto should not smell, yellowish phyto has a rotten smell to it

DO NOT throw dying phyto into your system as it's full of ammonia and will instantly kill your fish. Send me $20 bc I just saved ALL your livestock Lol

Dump it down the drain

.

salinity should be around .19 or .20
everything should be sterilized before
I dont know what is esayphyto, is that a fertilizer? Usually people use F2, some use miraclegrow

This is a pic of today
WhatsApp Image 2022-05-07 at 00.06.50.jpeg

there are some sediment, but the color is more intense than yesterday like it's growing but the yellow color isn't comforting

Yeah but color today is more intense, I'm still confused

Could be crash. Mine will go pale right before it crashes. Only have issues with Nano, my tetra is perfect.
How many times will it take to declare a crash? In your experience tetra is easier than nanno?

I used the same salinity of the tank 35ppm, I sterilized everyting before and easyphyto is a F2 based fertilizer

Ah yes the stages of making fine whiskey . Not your situation as I think your heading in bad situation . Smell it I’m sure it probably won’t smell good and certainly won’t get better as it ages . Start again , second time is a charm :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I can't smell due to covid
I'll let run there and I would see in what will involve, in the next days I'll post some pic

It will get paler and paler if it is to crash. A couple things I did when I only ran Nano was to use tap water and mix to a 1.020 specific gravity. I let the tap water sit 24hrs, but doubt it mattered much.
Tetra I use water from my normal mixing and full salinity. I am going to try this batch with tap and lower sp and see if it changes the tetra results at all.
My Nano has been crashing using the higher salinity.
I want to try Iso next.

That’s the creative spirit , so tasting it probably won’t help either as when I had covid I lost both . Hope you come through ok . This issue isn’t as important as your health . But seriously turning yellow isn’t the color I’ve experienced to be a sign of anything good . Something didn’t go right .or it went right until it didn’t . Go take care of yourself and worry about the this after .

Keep going. Looks okay right now. Just may need to add some more food or take some out and replace water and food.
Thx, probably my mistake was at start, i add 125ml of phyto into 3 liter of water
Too much water for few phyto, I read I had to do 1:1 ratio

I am terrible about measuring. A common issue with me. I just add water and poor in some phyto and add some fertilizer and go. I am careful about not adding too much feed, but sometimes the jar is green when I start and sometimes it is very light, almost clear.
Best to follow directions when you first start out.

It’s the 18th day and idk if I should wait to let it become more green or change half with new water
