Hi there. I recently purchased a used tank that I have up and running. It’s acrylic and molded. I also have a sump attached.

I’m worried that because of the lack of direct surface area the tank is not getting enough oxygen.

Right now it is located in a basement and the top has a color so the air circulation isn’t that great already.

On the overflow, place a tube in it. As for cover, it is very locked in causing condensation and reducing oxygen/surface air exchange. Consider also installing a fan to produce air across surface under hood

What do you mean by place a tube in the overflow? It has the tube for the drain and there’s a hole in that. There’s agitation in the pipes from the overflow to the sump. I just don’t think much air is getting sucked through that small hole.

In the hole. That hole is known as a siphon break and the tube will break the air and prevent overflow in the event of power outage

I’ve tested it. There’s no risk of that happening. I shut the power off to the entire tank. One of my return outlets is lightly over the water to increase surface agitation and to break any siphon.

The sump fills up with some but never overflows.

Get rid of the sand in the sump and the rock. Just have macroalgae and a skimmer. That will handle oxygen issues.
