I've been curing 40 lbs of live rock for 2 months now, and I moved it into my fish room in a barrel with 20 gals of old water from the display tank. I was getting ready to sculpt it and beforehand I thought I should top it off from using some airline tubing from a 30 gal RODI bin to lower the salinity due to evaporation from a few days. At this point my parents needed me and I became side tracked from there only to find that 2 hours later I had gone from 20 gal to 50 gal. My salinity measures 1.012-3. Can the sponges and bacteria on the rock live in this? As soon as I saw the problem, I took out 30 gal and added salt back up to 1.022. Is it worth saving it or should I boil it and just kill it off and place it in my 125 gal display?

Boil it? You want to make sure it's really dead, just to be sure?:-)

Why don't you just give it a week and test for ammonia and nitrite. You'll find out soon enough if you need to wait for everything to settle again. I suspect it will be fine.

This was last night and I checked the ammonia levels and in getting a zero reading. I'll wait it out. Hopefully a majority of the bacteria is still there.
