I want to convert a stock overflow box to have an emergency standpipe for piece of mind I plan on using the old return hole as the drain and keeping the factory durso drain. Ile hard plumb the return over the edge of the glass see attached photo for diagram

This is exactly what I did to my old tank. Used both as drains, and ran the returns up and over the back.

Not a single drain issue in 11yrs on that tank. Worked great for that setup.

Let’s see if I got this correct

Flip those around.
3/4" bulkhead will be the main with a gate valve.
1" will be your emergency.

Will be surprised how much flow you can get through a 3/4" bulkhead with a gate valve at full siphon. And the emergency should be able to handle the water if for some reason the main gets clogged.

There’s no need to have the reducers. Just use 3/4” pipe the whole way
You’re not gaining any flow by going up to 1”

Also you will need to lower the standpipe for the full siphon.
Personally I wouldn’t even have a pipe at all and just an overflow strainer
