Found this guy in my DT and moved it to a seperate tank as I think it may be whelk. Please help with ID by referring to attached pic.

I got told look underneath it and if its sealed going into the shell then its a whelk.
If you can see gaps where water could flow up and around its shell then its nassarious snail.

How true this is i do not know.
Some say if got speckled/tattoed snout then its whelk but my nassarious snails i bought got speckled snout but underneath is open but dont seem to cause any damage.they just under sand all day and night time they come up and eat what they can find

Yours doesn't look like any nassarius I've ever seen. I suppose it's possible but I wouldn't trust that thing in my tank. If it came in as a hitchiker I'd be even more suspicious. Honestly, nassarius are a type of whelk as well just not the predatory variety.

pictures of the eyes and foot would help. Whelks have a rather large foot. And very short eye stalks

Here is a link to help id the whelk. I think I'm wrong about the foot.

Honestly, the markings look like a whelk. They are very bold in color.

Yeah great point in this article of nassarious snails go under sandbed and whelks do not
