I don’t do expensive (to me) coral. I have no pride in reefing, so paying a certain dollar amount gives me no satisfaction. I actually like the free coral I get in trade with other Reefers better, they seem to do better too. But to each their own.
This whole thread was about the ridiculous cost of certain corals , or that was the intention.

Understood. Cost is subjective to the income of the Reefer, imo. To some people $800 is like $8 to the rest of us. I was offering contrast to those who value expensive items just because they are expensive.

I like something first then decide if the price is justifiable.

I have many corals I love that were under 100. In fact, if I like a coral and it’s inexpensive, that makes me like it more

For what you get, the initial cost of a Mariculture colony is pretty cheap. It is the months and months of grow out that is not. Sometimes you may get a great piece or just a dud. I guess this is my kick… some folks like to buy something expected, doesn’t even have to be expensive, like a slimer. But they know what they are going to get. For me it is developing a coral that I truly can call my own.

I've been to where these corals are collected. I know the prices. I have my own importation license even. There is no coral worth 800 dollars. If it was that rare or exclusive they wouldnt be allowed to collect it in the first place. People need to stop buying into this tomfoolery.

Now if you paid 30 or 40 bucks for a decent frag, that's fair, and if it's larger than that and actually grown over the plug and you paid maybe 50 bucks, that's cool too. It costs money to break up cheap colonies and maintain them in your "facility" until you sell them. I get that too.

If you're paying 150 dollars for a pinky nipple sized piece of "purple poopity-doo" (I made that up, thanks) that was just glued to a plug before it was thrown in the bag, then the joke's on you. You got SERVED! MMMMM MMMMM!!!! And that's some funny stuff!😁👍

I'll support an honest business, but I ain't paying for anyone's nose job or hair implants.

Other things you have to consider is supply and demand. Lets say you import a MC colony and it takes you a year to develop it. Then what you have nurtured turns into something great, and your initial offering you can get 5-6 decent size frags off of this coral. But you have 30 ppl that want this coral. Those first 5-6 frags are going to go for a high price. But then the initial frags the ppl. paid a higher price turn into colonies and those ppl will recoup some of their money and frags will be put out there. The demand will eventually subside and that coral will go for $50.
So $150 for Purple poopity-doo would be a good deal for someone when a couple years before it was triple the price and that person really wanted that coral and couldn’t afford it at the time.
