Well, still no response from Vertex. I asked them if they were suggesting that I use the skimmer in this condition. "is it causing any issues with the pumps performance" 
...seriously? well, since I don't want to use it and electrocute myself I guess that would be a yes.
I even asked if there is no warranty to quote me a price for new pump. still nothing... This seems like really bad customer service. I guess I should post a new thread warning other Somatic users. I mean is this normal design to have the wire coming right out of the base so that when it is placed up against the wall of the sump it is kinked up at such an awkward 90 deg angle? not like I ever abused the thing, I hardly ever take it out for complete cleanings either. It must have just been vibration against the wall of my sump.
