I'm about 3 months into my 40gallon breeder tank. And i noticed that my flasher wrasses behavior start to change. Its still hunting food when i feed. But now it just lays in the corner of the tank instead of its regular burrow. I attatched a photo of it for you see. But im at a total loss on what to do. I have my old 29 ready go start back up if needed. My clowns look okay but i cant honestly tell if they have the spots either. My flame angel also seems to have the spots and is missing a chunk out of its tail fin. I noticed the clowns bullying it a couple minutes ago but not entirely sure whats going on. Per api test kit nitrate and nitrite are at 0 while ammonias riding between 0 and .25. Im running a 120dc protien skimmer and a fuge with chaeto. What do guys?http://imgur.com/oRsaoWv

that looks more like velvet to me. The spots are quite small and numerous. How long have you had this wrasse and what was the last wet thing added to the tank? Did any of these fish go through QT?

I agree. Here is my velvet protocol: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/velvet-amyloodinium-ocellatum.217570/#post-2499437

And this provides more information on the disease: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/velvet-amyloodinium-ocellatum.217570/

I highly recommend setting up that 29 gal ASAP as a hospital tank, and treating all your fish with either copper or Chloroquine phosphate.

There are pics of my 29 gal QT if you scroll down in this thread: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-to-quarantine.189815/

Red dragonette....not a red mandarin correct?

If this is the fish, it won't handle being in copper. :(

Since i dont have copper on hand atm, should i just throw them in the qt? I dont even have pvc for them to hide in as of rn. I dont want them to stress out and fight each other.

Always qt. I just ordered a naso tang today, he will be hitting the qt after a nice acclimation drip. Usually the fish I get comes from my friends giant system and I have zero problems out of them......but, there's always a chance. I had velvet one time, humblefish and melypr1985 guided me through and I managed to save 60% of my fish that are alive to this day.

And i just want to take the time to thank @Humblefish, as well as @melypr1985, for devoting themselves to this forum and doing the best they can for everybody who asks for help with fish diseases and other odds and ends. They do a great job and deserve more credit than they receive. Thanks you two!

Would probably help them to be in "clean water" away from the parasites in your DT. But that won't last long without a bottle of copper. o_O

you can still do the first part of the protocol to buy yourself some time until you can get the meds you need tomorrow.
The short version:
  • 5 minute freshwater dip
  • Immediately afterwards, perform a chemical bath (in saltwater matching SG/temp the fish came from). You have two options:
  1. Acriflavine (preferred) - Do the bath for 75-90 minutes, but remove the fish immediately at the first sign of distress. Aerate heavily both before & during the bath, and temperature control the water. The following products contain acriflavine: Acriflavine-MS andRuby Reef Rally. DO NOT mix acriflavine with any other chemicals.
  2. Formalin - Do the bath for 30-60 minutes max, but remove the fish immediately at the first sign of distress. Aerate heavily both before & during the bath, and temperature control the water. The following products contain formalin: Formalin-MS, Quick Cure,Aquarium Solutions Ich-X, Kordon Rid-Ich Plus. Use protection (rubber gloves, face mask, eye protection, etc.) whenever handling formalin as it is a known carcinogen! However, you can add Methylene Blue to the formalin bath (1 capful per 2-3 gallons of bath water.)
If you dont have any of these meds either, just do the freshwater dip and get the rest tomorrow. You can use a couple small pieces of live rock until you start meds. Take them out and replace with pvc at that point.

Another question, should i take apart my tank to get those yashas out from hiding? I dont want to disturb the corals

Yes, if you want to keep them. If you have velvet in your tank it's a very fast death in most cases. If for some reason they survive having velvet, leaving them in the tank would only keep the velvet parasite alive to reinfect the rest of your fish when they get put back in the display after treatment. Either way, it's important they come out.
