I just had this discussion with my kids. They are intelligent concerned people cause I raised them that way.

If a bureaucracy is created to fix a problem the only way the bureaucracy can grow is if the problem gets worse. So poverty, medical care, education and everything else people are concerned about gets worse while we spend more and more money on it. Nothing ever gets better.

By design. ZERO problems fixed but lots of vacation homes purchased.

At least we are stimulating the luxury industries.

I dont want to argue about recycling but it does more good than harm, as for china they were buying all our scrap metal 15years ago recyling it and selling it back,

Maybe im more optamistic than others posting here but i think its the small things that matter, even if its just taking a bag to the shop with you.



This is a old pic but in the uk they used to issue free plastic bags for shopping at stores, the government then started charging 5p per bag to each customer saving 9billion bags going to landfill of blowing round the country

Its the small things that matter and if everyone of us did at least one the world will be here for a lot longer

There is no recycling where I live. It is not economically viable.

Until smart people make it cheaper to reuse something than make a new one it isn't going to work.

Look at somewhere like sweeden they recycle 90% of there waste

There are currently talks here about reverse vendors for things like drinking bottles amd cans. So your chaged a few pence per bottle extra and once returned back your reimbursed. They have done it in other parts of europe a few years. But sweeden have had these reverse vendors for over 30years....

Nice idea but have you ever spent any time in the 3rd world? Have you lived and worked in underdeveloped countries? Have you been involved in destroying several countries (Iraqi, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia for instance, have you seen the pollution that leaves behind)? In the 3rd world the issue is not pollution it is survival.

Recycling only works in the developed world and if people are willing to pay for it. Tell me brit, if you were not forced to pay your 5p per bag by government edict backed up by the power of the police would you have stopped using them? How many people would be willing to voluntarily pay for the plastic bag vs getting them for free (which by-the-way are not free but paid for by the store/shop owner and built into the price of your goods).

Fixing the pollution issue is bigger than any one person, group or country, it is a global issue. The problem is simply who is going to pay for the clean-up and prevention for the future and how will it be enforced?

Are you willing to go to War to enforce a global solution? What is the global solution?

The U.S. and especially has had a deposit per bottle for years, pay it when you purchase the product, get it back when you take it to the recycler. Yet you still find cans and bottles on the side of the road, in the trash or on the beach.

But you can feel good that you are doing something, even if that something is meaningless.

You can pour a cup of water into the Ocean but will it raise the sea level? Doing something that accomplishes nothing is little more than making yourself feel good. If that is what you are after then please continue.

Have you actually paid attention to where all the pollution of our oceans comes from? A VERY small percentage (something like 5%) of it comes from the US. I have been on flooded rivers here in Texas and saw the trash floating downstream. While it makes me sad that so many Americans allow this to happen, it is still just a drop in the bucket compared to India, Africa, and eastern Asia who make up the most of the river pollution. If you want to influence someone talk to people in those continents...they are the problem. I seriously doubt they will listen since many of them are simply trying to SURVIVE and wondering if they have enough to eat tonight! Most of them could care less about what the oceans will look like in 25 years. As a reefer this seriously sucks but be careful where you direct your energy. Raising ANOTHER tax here in the US will not make any difference and just make another politician even richer.

There might be some hope for a near future solution to the plastic epidemic.

Late last year China made some changes to its regulations on what can and can not enter its country to be recycled.
During the last 20 years China has gladly accepted the worlds trash, using man power to sort for the marketable. As its economy has changed so has its needs and no longer needs this source of raw materials. Closing its ports to plastics and anything that contains more than 5% marketable material.(this wasnt a surprise to economists, just countries)

The effects have been dramatic. Oregon and Washington state are now dumping their recycling in local land fills. The UK and Ireland(95% of its recycling went to China) are moving forward the dates of becoming throw away plastic free.
When the choice is remove the plastic or build an incinerator in your town, there really isnt a choice.

It is global, but if you look at it like that who produces most? Do you not think developed countrys produce more and should do more? Do you not think 3rd world or developing countrys have other things to contend to?
It starts with everyone.. i wont put my keys down to my current car and walk 10miles to work... but small things i do that i mentioned already
