Indeed there was a rise in the number of votes, and also in the number of submissions and the quality of those, which I think was a good thing.
The PM that was sent to all did also help with the votes apparently!
After all the only real measure is to look at the winner photo and assess if it deserved to win or not and this month photo I would say did, mine was the runner up but i still voted for the one that won!
There has been POTMs votes where the majority of votes went to a pic I didn't personally think was the winner yet even with good photography and aquarium knowledge who am I to judge!
We have tried a few times to have a photo critique thread of the five pics with the most votes yet that never had any traction unfortunately. I believe that would have helped people understand what others really thought about what they thought was a great picture.
The real challenge is that this competition is more a combination of a subject choice, and photography skills and people might give more value to one of the two sometimes especially people who are not into photography per say and it's a tough balance.
