I have just ordered 2 new tangs. I ordered a "yellow eye kole tang" and a sailfin tang. Both of them are medium size. I currently have a purple tang (again medium). Any advice on when I add these two new tangs to keep the aggression down. I do have a rather large tank. 240 Gallon (8 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet). I already have two different algae feeding stations. 1 seaweed clip 1 seaweed feeder (blue holder). I am also planning to add them at night. This should help. But any other ideas? I know purple tangs can be a little aggressive. Since he is the only tang in my tank at this moment, I decided to add these 2 tangs when they came in. I just ordered them from Live Aquaria once the kole tang came in. I always wanted these tangs.

I'd like to think that in a tank that large, adding both at once would be enough confusion/distraction that aggression from the Purple (if any) wouldn't last a day. But if you are super-worried, do you have an acclimation box for a time?

It is important to note, I do have plenty of rock work. There is over 200lbs of live rock in the tank. So there are plenty of areas to hide. Everything I have read said, that adding both the Kole and Sailfin tanks at the same time is the best approach.

Do you have a mirror you can put on the side of the tank? That’s what I do when I add new tangs. They’re more concerned with their reflection then the new additions.

I just looked and my purple tang is considered a small. I have only had him since the beginning of April.

I can do that. That is an easy one. So I am planning on adding the new tangs at night. So I guess I could just put the mirror next to the front of the tank in the morning.

I would observe in the morning and be ready with the mirror. If everyone is getting along then there’s no need to stress anyone out with the mirror. But if there’s chasing and flashing the mirror should deflect the aggression immediately.

You have a large very nice tank with separation between the rock structures. I would be less concerned about aggression and more concerned about them bringing in some parasite.

An acclimation box isn't an expensive investment and would be good to have on hand.

My sailfin tang turned in to the tank bully and chased around my three yellow tangs, and somehow convinced my blue hippo tang that he should get in on the bullying..

Increased feedings have helped this considerably though, and now there is very little aggression, and everyone is growing and fattening up.

If you’re not QT’ing. Feed the purple heavily as the bags are floating and near the bags.
That will give you an early indication if the purple will shows any aggression. Can also place a nori clip right next to bags. Shut off lights after and add. It is definitely wise to add a pair to throw off the purple as you plan to do. Only mirror as a last resort try not to promote aggression if it’s not there to begin with.

Fire away - shouldn't be a problem. As long as you keep them well fed, aggression should be pretty darn low. You will see some chasing around for a day/two but should settle down. I have way more (and bigger) fish on my 8ft tank.

Both of them can hold their own.
3 tangs in 240g….
Simultaneously.

There will be some display, but it should be short term, just until position is accepted.
