My new build Is going to consist of a 180 Gallon aquarium on a custom built Baltimore Ravens. I have been reading and doing a little research about closed loop systems. I am interested in running a clean looking closed loop with holes only holes drilled on the back rear side of the tank for the cleanest look I can possibly achieve. If anyone has any suggestions about running a closed loop with a sump in the mix without having to run the sump separately please let me know. I will post some pictures of the stands progress so far. I have been building it with scrap material for the frame 2x4 etc. and the rest of the stand will come from new wood/sheets from Home Depot, or Lowes.

Thanks,

The corals look great in your 75 Gallon. I am wanting to add more SPS soon. I have been the Acan and chalice man for awhile and want to add a little something different in the mix.

Looking to be a nice upgrade for you and think I understand what your trying to achieve with the 'Clean Look' as far as closed loops go they are just that 'closed' meaning no open ends like sumps or fuges etc... The closed loop does this; allows for your pump to run at its maximum flow rate because of there being no back pressure/head pressure as it being balanced in/out. You can have this plus what looks like this for your sump return and if you plan on keeping mostly LPS you would have plenty enough flow without going crazy with the 'Closed Loop' system. Take a look at Ocean Motion motorized valves for your CL design to get some random flow patterns or even a SQUID for your sump return. Following along.

Cheers, Todd

I thought the same thing at first. But as I was further researching I found Info on tying both systems together.

Is that dimensional lumber you're using as the frame of your stand, or plywood, or hardwood? It's hard to tell by the photos. Whatever "skin" you intend will add strength, but to me, it does not look like quite enough for over 1500lbs of water, especially for lateral forces (i.e. it may rack).

The Frame is made of 2x4's. The top are real wood 1"x1" slats. The inside is frame for my sump area is real 1/2" finished on one side wood that was water sealed and painted. The entire outside of the stand will be wrapped with again 1/2" finished on one side real wood except for the four doors I will install. Also there will be a hidden ATO compartment on the left side of the stand that will be able to access from the left side door only.
