Im in the process of finishing my 90 build. It’s 48x18x24h. My canopy is short and would put the lense of my 3 kessil a160s about 3-1/4” from the water. I plan on doing a mixed reef with a tall/minimalist aquascape. I want to avoid drilling holes and hanging the lights above, but is this just too close?

They aren't too close in terms of being to intense as you can dial that down. But being this close means you don't get as much spread (coverage) from the light in the tank. And these are kind of like spotlight already.

At 31/4" off the water and given the amount of water movement it appears you have in the photo, you will probably get a lot of salt build up on the case and lens over time. Pay close attention and see how long it takes for any build up to get started and then make it a point to clean them off AT LEAST that often.

Is there another reason you think these might be too close to the water?

My main concern was the effect on corals, but they should be ok then depending on placement obviously. The salt buildup was another, but I can monitor that and make adjustments later if needed. I will update when the lights are in and I get my livestock moved over. Thank you.
