I'm considering getting two Kessil A360X tuna blue lights to add some shimmer to my tank. The question is, is there any functional difference between the controller and the wifi dongle?

My assumption is that the dongle will let me control it through a Kessil app on my phone, while the controller is hard-wired and does the same thing, but I have to be on-site.

Wifi is nice, of course, but it seems to me that lights are one of those set them and forget them items. I'm not going to be making changes to the light schedule or pattern unless I'm standing in front of the tank, so it doesn't seem that wifi is terribly important. They'll be powered through my Hydros controller, so if I ever did need to power them off remotely I can do that.

Yes. The controller will lose the time and date after power loss. The controller will also control new and older Kessil lights via a 3.5 mm jack and usb-c jack. The dongle is finicky sometimes and has to be reloaded occasionally. It can only control newer lights via usb-c. Both do a good job controlling the lights. You don’t have to buy the Kessil brand cables to connect the lights.
