Killer Emerald Crab?!

We just watched an emerald crab savagely rip a nassarius snail from it's shell! In 5 years of reefing we've not seen this before.

We thought emerald crabs were vegetarian?

There are many instances where an emerald crab will easily become an opportunistic feeder. They are crabs after all ;)

It definitely happens. I swore off emeralds years ago.

I banished a very large one to my sump. Caught him with a fish in his claws during feeding time. He also was going for acroporas polyps. He’s still alive, down there, looking all mutated. Scares me to look in that sump.

I have had several and never seen them do that but I guess you never know with crabs

they are super fun to watch!! ... until you watch them snag a sleeping anthias.
