Can I just remove the flow restrictor to flush the RO membrane or do I need to buy the kit?

For the cost (under $15 bucks for just the valve) I would say get a upgrade kit (the flush valve has the flow restrictor in it) from BRS just to keep it simple. Their site has a video on how to install it and it is way easy and eliminates doing multiple connections

Removing the restrictor and flushing this way would not "clean" the ro membrane very well....
The restrictor for bypass and cleaning is a different diameter and needs to be installed so backpressure is created on the membrane in order to properly do a flush.
