Hello, my first post on here....I was wondering if anyone has used the kitchen base cabinets for a stand. It would be two 36" base cabinets with a 6 foot counter top on them for a 125 gallon tank.
I was planning on a little 2x4 re-inforcement of the cabinets and was curious as to what you guys thought?
Thx for any replies or ideas.

I don't see anything wrong with it if you make sure it can handle it. :)

We need pics when you get done and welcome to R2R!

Watch the particle board. Solid wood and/or solid wood ply should be fine but particle board isn't good wet. 2X4 reinforcement will def help. My stand is solid oak 3/4" w/ no bracing and has been holding a 6' tank for years.

Thx for the reply...I didnt think there would be a problem....they are better built than most store bought aquarium stands. I will still add some extra framing, for peace of mind.
The only drawback I see is that the bottom will not all be one opening. I plan on using a skimmer sump that will be connected to another sump/ macro algae. I will just have to cut holes in the sides of the cabinets for the plumbing to run through......Hope it works like it does in my mind...lol

Awesome idea and the stand looks great. Definitely a better deal than a new aquarium stand.

That looks great.
I did something similar on a much smaller scale.
I bought a 12 gallon bio-cube and needed something to put it on.
I found a single door upper cabnet that with a piece of plywood on the top worked perfect for me and it was only $46

You should use matching cabinets for the canopy. The small kind that go over the space above the fridge. Nice work BTW

You shouldn't have any issues, I've had several 100 gallon tanks sitting over similar cabinet sets for years in my classroom w/out reinforcing them, and I've never had any issues. In fact, one run of 4 cabinets has two 100 gallon tanks sitting on top of them.
